The Future of In-Car Entertainment
By Bob Dillon
There are known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns, to quote a certain former Secretary of Defense and what is a definite known known is that, today, the center of in-car entertainment is audio. And it’s going to be that way for the foreseeable and distant future, even as one of the most exciting things on the immediate horizon is video. We know that video has a role in the car, but what its role will be is one of those known unknowns.
Today, the automobile is primarily driven by people, but we know that the automobile of the future will also be driven by computers. How that all plays out, is another known unknown, but video will be a big part of it. And there are other candidates, for example gaming, which will have a place, as will other categories of emerging entertainment. When looking at the future of in-vehicle entertainment, it comes down to the fact that the car is a unique environment and one that is on its way to becoming unlike any other.

Dealing with uncertainty in a changing landscape
How can OEMs best navigate this landscape of knowns and unknowns? With a versatile platform that is able to evolve as rapidly as the entertainment and digital world. That platform is DTS AutoStage, which bring together our connected radio, audio, and TiVo OS video, as well as Vewd Core – an embedded rendering and streaming engine for digital media devices – to deliver a globally scalable solution ready to adjust rapidly to the changing landscape. This versatility is the future of in-car entertainment.
