First Theatrical Release Featuring DTS:X Audio Premieres
On July 2, the 3D martial arts film “Monk Comes Down the Mountain” from celebrated director Chen Kaige premiered in theaters in major cities across China –becoming the first theatrical release featuring next-generation DTS:X audio.
DTS:X replicates a real-world sound environment that transports the audience into a new dimension of sound immersion by delivering truly captivating entertainment experiences in the cinema and at home. Unlike existing surround sound systems, DTS:X adapts to the viewing environment, allowing for a flexible speaker configuration that best fits the viewing space to more accurately convey the fluid movement of sound – in front of, behind, above and beside the audience, precisely where the mixer placed them.
Produced by New Classics Media and Sony’s Columbia Pictures, “The Monk” featuring DTS:X audio is currently playing in Beijing, Xiamen, Nanjing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. The movie is based on the best-selling novel Dao Shi Xia Shan (“A Monk Comes Down the Mountain”) by Xu Haofeng. With a cast studded with Chinese stars, including Aaron Kwok and Chang Chen, the movie grossed more than $38 million in its opening four days.
DTS partnered closely with GDC Technology in the cinema debut of DTS:X. With more than 40,000 installed digital servers, GDC has the largest installed base in the Asia-Pacific region, and the second largest globally. It is also a worldwide DTS:X certification agent and an exclusive provider of DTS:X installation and certification in cinemas in Asia.
“GDC is committed to offering state-of-the-art technology to its customers. We chose DTS:X because we believe it will transform the movie theater experience for audiences around the world,” said Dr. Man-Nang Chong, founder and CEO of GDC Technology. “Theater owners will appreciate the easy integration and flexible solutions that DTS:X offers as they upgrade their screens to this superior sound experience. Audiences win too. Because of the flexibility in speaker layout that DTS:X offers, immersive audio is now available to a larger number of theaters of all sizes than ever before.”
