Brian Slack, DTS, Leads Immersive Mixing and Panner Concepts Event
Brian Slack, Senior Manager Cinema & Pro Audio Solutions DTS, spoke at an MPSE Sound Advice event last Thursday. Titled “Immersive Mixing: Do You Know How Your Panner Actually Works?”, Slack spoke about various topics, starting with a history of panning to a live demonstration of Pro Tools panners, including 5.1, 7.1, 7.1.2, DTS:X, IMAX and others.
In addition, Slack concludes with a discussion on difference between object-based and channel-based systems. In describing object-based audio, he stated an object “is an allocentric function. So it doesn’t matter where you are in the room, as that [sound] goes around the room, all of you are going to point to the exact same spot in the room, not in the same spot referenced to you.”
