Exemplifying Extraordinary: DTS + Cinespia Partnership Spotlight

Cinespia is a Los Angeles-based organization that brings movie magic to life with screenings of classic films throughout the year to an audience of hundreds of thousands from all around the world, including some of Hollywood’s most famous faces. With over 40 events per year, Cinespia hosts dazzling screenings under the stars at iconic venues including The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, The Greek Theatre and the Los Angeles Historic Park. Cinespia also produces private screenings, fundraisers, concerts, television and film premieres year-round outdoors and at the beloved Art Deco movie palaces of historic downtown Los Angeles’ theatre district. The 2022 season marks the 21st anniversary of the first and longest-running outdoor screening series in Los Angeles.

Cinespia’s mission of creating a unique experience for film aficionados paired perfectly with DTS and its 30-year dedication to sensational sound. DTS has served as Cinespia’s exclusive audio partner for over eight years, making this Cinespia’s longest continued partnership to date.

It all started when DTS audio experts visited one of Cinespia’s venues, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, to consult on ways to improve the quality of the movie dialogue for the audience in the open, outdoor environment. “The movies had been shown with two stereo speakers up front,” said Brandon Gass, Xperi sr. director of creative video. “We advised adding additional center channel speakers and sets of rear speakers that were time delayed creating a more immersive, surround experience.”

The improved audio quality leveled up an already extraordinary moviegoing experience. Each night guests are invited to bring their own blankets, food and drinks (including beer and wine), before settling in under the stars for a classic (and sometimes campy) cinematic experience. The magic of Hollywood’s most memorable moments is heightened by the roar of the crowd, impeccable sound quality and more often than not a celebrity sighting or two. Every screening also features world-class DJ talent to keep the crowd buzzing before and after the main event. “I’ve been going to Cinespia screenings for many years, and one of my favorite moments was Questlove DJ’ing after a screening of ‘Purple Rain.’,” said Amy Brennan, Xperi corporate communications. “When I joined Xperi, learning about the DTS sponsorship of Cinespia made me proud to be part of a company that has brought me extraordinary experiences through the years.”

People travel from far and wide to watch these films and appreciate the art of filmmaking in the city that put filmmaking on the map. Attendees often include Hollywood A-listers who either star in the films being shown or are simply fans themselves. It serves as a Los Angeles-flavored reminder that the magic of movies is meant to be shared. Special events, including the Fourth of July screenings, conclude the evening with legendary fireworks lighting up the night sky.

“DTS plays an integral role in the customer experience at every Cinespia screening across all of our historical LA venues. We are so proud to have DTS as our long-standing partner helping make the movie magic experience come to life for our audience,” says John Wyatt, Cinespia’s founder.
