Glossary
- 96/24
- Refers to audio that is encoded at 96 kHz / 24 bits.
- AVR
- Audio / Video Receiver
- Bit Depth
- Refers to the measurement (in bits) used to digitally capture a sound wave as PCM
- Bit Streams
- Compressed, digital data that is used to send/recieve video/audio.
- Bit-rate
- refers to the amount of bits transferred every second. (Bit Depth) X (Sampling Frequency)
- Constant Bit-rate
- refers to a bit stream that has the same number of bits transferred every second, regardless of content fluctuation
- Core, DTS Core
- Refers to DTS Digital Surround
- Discrete Channel
- An audio channel that is encoded to independently carry data
- Downmixing
- A process that converts higher channel audio to lesser channel playback. Example: DTS Core automatically downmixes to stereo when played on a stereo-TV
- ES
- Refers to Extended Surround, which is 6.1 channel audio.
- HD
- High-Definition. referring to higher resolution video/audio
- HDMI
- High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), is an all-digital audio/video interface capable of transmitting uncompressed streams.
- Master Audio
- DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless audio codec, which allows bit-to-bit representation of a original movie's studio master soundtrack.
- Matrix Channel
- An audio channel that has its data carried by peripheral channels
- Mono
- Single channel audio
- PCM
- Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a digital representation of an analog sound signal
- Primary Audio
- Refers to the feature audio of a Blu-ray Disk
- Sampling Frequency
- The constant interval (in Hertz) in which audio is captured as PCM
- Secondary Audio
- Refers to the Interactive Audio of a Blu-ray Disk (e.g., director's comments)
- Stereo
- 2-channel audio
- Variable Bit-rate
- a bit stream encoding that varies the amount of data that is transferred every second, with relation to fluctuation in content.
